The State budget shows only part of pension spending. Here we use Eurostat data (transmitted by Italy via ISTAT) to look at the whole system: how much it costs, who pays for it, who receives a pension, and how many people are approaching retirement age.

“As published” means the figures exactly as the source recorded them at the time. “In today’s euros” means the same figures converted into today’s euros using the ISTAT price index, so distant years can be compared.
